Tecamachalco Restaurants

  • Las Pencas – Great food, the menu includes steaks, chicken pasta dishes, and seafood. If you walk outside the front door of Santa Julia and turn to your right, then walk up the hill about a block and the restaurant is on your left (opposite side of the street). Ask the front desk at Santa Julia if they are open before walking there and finding out they are closed. The service is slow, but the food is worth the wait. The owner’s name is Diego. Reservations in advance are suggested. Slightly expensive.
  • Casa Laureana – This restaurant is very good. They open at 9:00am for breakfast. Their menu is diverse, and they have pictures of the food items, which is helpful if you don’t know Spanish. We typically go there to eat the first day after arriving at the hotel and then possibly another day during our trip.
Do not walk to this restaurant. You can park your vehicle right on the street outside of it.

  • Ta Carbon Taqueria – There are 2 of these restaurants relatively close to the hotel. One is within walking distance, the other you have to drive. Totally 2 different eating atmospheres. Local real Mexican food.

-The first one (drive) is located on the main boulevard about 1.5 miles from the large warehouse store Bodega Aurrea. Go to the main street, turn right, travel 1.5 miles and it will be on the right side of the street. Look for Auto Zone.

-The second one (walking), is located on the same street as Santa Julia. Go across the street and turn left leaving the hotel and walk down towards the main street for about 3 blocks. The restaurant is on your right. They have a big smoker outside and they prepare the food outside as well. It’s a very neat place. The beef tacos are small but amazing. They also have items to share, which worked great with a large team.

  • El Portal – It is a small restaurant that specializes in short orders. It is located just off the zocalo (town square/park) in Tecamachalo. They have great milkshakes. Food is good, service can be slow.
  • Hecha A Mano – Very nice, excellent food & prices. Owners’ sister is Alexjandra from Santa Julia. Address: Privada de la 5 poniente 307, Techamachalo
  • Padua – This restaurant is very nice. The upstairs, sitting outside is the best place to sit (the spiral staircase can be a little challenging). They have a wide variety of food choices. It is down the street from the zocolo.

Super Aztec – This is not a restaurant but a fruit and vegetable market. They make amazing bread here! It’s worth stopping in just for that.

There is also a pizza place one block from the hotel. (I think it’s Casa Laureana) Check with the hotel for information. You can pick up the pizza or have it delivered.
